What is a
paint-your-own-pottery studio?
A Touch of Glaze is a new type of ceramic studio for people of all ages to
come in and paint pieces of unfinished pottery.
We have more than 140+ pieces of
bisque (unfinished pottery) for you to choose from. You simply select what
you would like and let our staff get it for you.
Look through our idea books,
stamps, stencils, and browse our 25 colors to get started designing and
decorating your piece. There's no extra charge for colors or time.
Once you've finished your
"pottery masterpiece," then you leave it with us for 3 or 4 days
to be overglazed and fired to 1808 degrees in our kiln. On your pick up
date just bring your receipt back to A Touch of Glaze and take home your
bright, unique work-of-art. It makes a great gift for any occasion because
it's fun, creative, and uniquely yours. No artistic skill is needed and
our friendly staff will give you as much help or as little help as you
need.
What does it
cost?
Our 140+ pieces of unfinished pottery (bisque) are individually priced
from $2.99 to $60,
with the majority in the $8 to $25 range. Unlike other studios that charge you extra for colors,
firing, or studio time, we use an all-inclusive pricing system, so the
price you see on the price tag is what you pay (not including sales tax).
What do I do if
I can't paint/am not creative?
A Touch of Glaze is designed with everyone from the seasoned artist to the
people like you who might need a little inspiration or help. We have idea
books, stamps, stencils, tracing paper, and a knowledgeable staff that
doesn't mind giving you help if you want it. No experience is necessary.
The time here is about fun and creating a unique work of art.
How long does
it take to paint a piece?
How long it takes depends on the piece of pottery and the design you've
chosen. The more intricate the piece and detailed the design, the longer
it will take. On average we tell people about 1 to 2 hours. Then it takes
us about 3 to 4 days to cover it in a clear glaze and fire it in our
kilns. After that you can come pick it up and take it home to enjoy.
Do I need an
appointment?
No appointment is necessary for individuals and small groups. For larger
groups and parties (6 or more) we recommend booking ahead of time. Visit
our parties/groups page to find out more about our group rates and how
parties work. Our hours of operation are listed below:
Tuesday - Saturday : 10am to 9pm
Sunday: Noon to 6pm
Monday - Closed
*Abbreviated hours around the holidays so it's best to call ahead
How do I
arrange group/party reservations?
Our parties/group page gives lots of details about these special rates and
requirements. Basically a group of 6 or more who spends at least $8 per
person gets a 10% discount or a commemorative plate. Scouts get a special
presentation and hands-on activity to go along with badge requirements (if
desired). Custom parties are also available.
Do you have a
newsletter?
When you come to A Touch of Glaze and choose a piece of pottery you are
given the option of putting an address and e-mail address on the routing
slip. This information will be entered into our private database to be
used for newsletters, specials, coupons, etc. If at any time
you decide you don't want to receive anything by e-mail/mail just let us
know and we will take your name off our list. And we will not sell or
share your information with other companies.
What do I need
to pick up my piece?
The receipt is best, but if you give us your last name our staff can
find your piece(s) and check the name against our paperwork. We also have
all the finished pieces displayed on a shelf by our main desk so you can
help find your piece and see it before it's wrapped up to go home.
Are the
finished pieces food-safe/dishwasher-safe/microwave-safe?
All pieces are food and microwave-safe. If you use your piece in a
microwave, it is recommended that it be hand washed, otherwise a
dishwasher is fine. Due to way it is fired and the pressure of the water
in a dishwasher, the water can work its way beneath the glaze and the the
bisque manufacturer warns if that happens the piece could break when
heated, but this is rare.
How old do you
have to be to do this?
People of any age can paint pottery. Infants can participate by doing
hand prints and footprints. Kids come up with some great designs and best
of all there are no lines to stay in. It's whatever you want to paint. All ages
can enjoy painting together, but the younger the painters the more adult
involvement we invite.
Why does it
take 3-4 business days before I can pick up my piece?
It takes a few days for us to get your piece back to you because there
are 3 steps it has to go through once you're done painting it. First your
piece must dry completely (approx. 4 hours). Then we dip it in a clear
glaze which completely seals it. Once that's dry we put it in our kiln to
be fired, which takes around 24 hours. Then we take it out and sand off
the stilt marks (the stilts hold the pottery off the kiln shelves so the
two don't stick together). Sometimes, if we have too many pieces to fit in
the kiln, items need to go into another kiln (which may add a day or two).
What if I make
a mistake while I paint?
Mistakes are relatively easy to fix while you're in the painting
process. The glazes are water-soluble and can be wiped off or scraped off (once
dry) if needed. If you've never done it before you might want to ask the
staff for help.
Can I order
special items?
If we don't have the item your looking for in our inventory then we
can help you locate it through our vendors. Once you've picked the piece
and paid a deposit to us we will order it for you and let you know when it
has arrived in our studio. Then you can come in and paint it as usual.
Do you offer
classes?
We offer classes year around, posted both on our calendar and in the
studio. We also have a project of the month that requires no special sign
up. The directions are detailed at our studio.
Are the paints
toxic?
All the paints at A Touch of Glaze are non-toxic and wash off hands
and clothes with soap and water.
